In many ways, far more harrowing and bleak than the POLIN centre, the Jewish Historical Institute tells the story quietly through the notes, memoirs, postcards and letters of ordinary people. Very few of them survived the Great Deportation but many of them did not even survive to be taken to the concentration camp: thousands died of disease and starvation. The displays are in both Polish and English. It is a very quiet place, with few of the mass of visitors getting to this spot. The staff at the entrance were extremely kind but the sour-faced older room attendant was very odd, barking angrily at me as I started to go upstairs to the temporary exhibit. Her manner was so aggressive that I went back down to the entrance to see if I had done something wrong. I hadn’t, and I returned upstairs. The temporary exhibition about the Torah scrolls on the top floor is fascinating.
