title: Conjuring the Oceans - History Group
description: Evolution of research practice - Digital and material creative interventions braid themselves into overarching decolonial ecologies, forming tidal flows between collections, moulding tidalectic, epistemic kinships and alter/native (Braithwaite, 1994) histography, grounded within Caribbean marine geographies, multispecies entanglements and potentially as Hartman (2008) suggests act of reparation. At the heart of the ecosystem/s are deep ancestral, ethical, and sacred articulations and practices rooted within Caribbean cosmologies. The conjuring of these worlds, informed by living cultural communities, entities, and knowledge systems (in collections, communities and/or the natural world), are essential to radical and just transformations critical to our futures. In this talk, Christina will be discussing a two year residency project with the TATE from 2024 and the experience searching for objects from the Caribbean region in these UK national collections and how this informed the making of the work for exhibition at the Tate Modern. She will then share her research to date in the context of the field work she has been doing in Barbados this July/August.

This lecture examines how this historic pattern of Black self-hatred emanating from enslavement has manifested itself in contemporary times. It looks at religion, slave battery, standards of beauty such as hair processing and skin bleaching, speech, language, entertainment, and other aspects of popular culture. The talk concludes with the demand for psychological rehabilitation and healing so that Black communities can reverse this trend.'

title: 'Glimpses of the Goldsmith Trade: in Barbados During the long Eighteenth Century'
description: During the long 18th century, profits from the sugar industry in Barbados resulted in a local demand for European luxury goods, with Bridgetowns natural harbour becoming a key trading hub in the region. The prospering planters and merchants furnished their homes both for comfort and to display their wealth. Travellers accounts of hospitality and surviving probate inventories evidence the fact that silver was part of this endeavour. While imported wares dominated the retail market, Bridgetown also became home to numerous working goldsmiths and jewellers. These artisans were engaged in manufacturing new wares (when supplies from Europe were interrupted) and repairing worn or damaged pieces. The present study uses archival and genealogical sources to explore how the Barbadian goldsmiths trade operated during the long 18th century, who the artisans were, and how they marketed themselves. So far, over 100 members of the trade have been identified between 1688 and 1815. Comparison of this register of workers to a group of previously unattributed silver objects (each marked with its makers initials) has allowed for tentative attributions to Barbados of several surviving pieces.

description: 'This talk will address the process of reclaiming the genealogical legacy of my family''s origins in Barbados, Great Britain and their migration to the United States beginning at the First World War. My great grandfather, (?) Dodds, was born (?) in Barbados (?) and married Alice Jane T. Dodds, born in Great Britain. The Dodds family lived in St. Michael''s Parish. My grandmother, Ottile Adalase Dodds Maxwell, was born in Great Britain, migrated to and was educated in Barbados.
She became a master seamstress and as a child, made all my clothing. Many of my Bajan aunts were gifted in stitching, crochet, tatting and drawn thread embroidery. My own artwork and research is deeply influenced by women in my family, as well as the anonymity of vintage women''s handwork which I repurpose and incorporate into my bricolage installations. My artistry and art historical research explores my fascination with the innovative uses and designs of fibers, textiles, handmade piece work, patterns, rhythms, textures and colors found throughout the Black Atlantic Diaspora and especially, my family''s memories of Barbados.'

title: Some Genealogies of Early Barbadian Families from St. Lucy and the other Northern Parishes
description: "Presenter - John Knox \n\nSeventeenth century genealogies of early families from the Northern/Leeward Parishes are probably the most difficult to construct because parochial records do not begin until well into the 18th century for these parishes. The work done by Joanne Mcree Sanders on will abstracts from 1639 to 1725 is the best secular record available that allows in some cases, genealogies of early Barbadian families to be constructed quickly without resorting to the actual wills themselves. Some families have explored their genealogies into the sixteenth centuries and have published their findings online giving the sources of their information. A few early family genealogies are explored and various maps of the island, including actual field maps are used to locate where families lived and confirm their existence. We can learn a great deal about early Barbados doing this exercise. I plan to share some of the insights and theories in this presentation."

title: '“The Caribbean: Landscapes of Desire” by Prof. Edward J. Sullivan'
description: 'The Talk
This talk will consider one of the principal themes of Caribbean art throughout the past four centuries. Landscape is one of the connecting threads throughout the archipelago and the Caribbean mainland. Artists in the early phases of colonization employed images of a peaceful place as metaphors for possibilities of financial investment on the part of Europeans. 19th century artists, both those from the region and from beyond, were loath to face the scourge of enslavement in their depictions of plantation life. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, an era of liberation from the yoke of European domination, landscape was employed as the quintessential symbol of a new identity. More recently, artists have expanded the meanings of landscape to question the past, the present, and ruminate on the future in this present time of climate crisis. This lecture brings into play a wide variety of visual artists, examining their differences and similarities in order to suggest a “Caribbean-ness” or sense of shared space and experience in visual expression through the interpretation of the earth.
The Speaker
Edward J. Sullivan is the Helen Gould Shepherd Professor in the history of art at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. His fields of specialization include hemispheric arts, with a particular focus on the Caribbean and Latin America. He is the author of many volumes that examine the history of art in the region from colonial times to the present. He is also active as a curator and has organized many exhibitions in museums and cultural spaces in the United States, Latin America and Europe.'

title: 'Entangled Islands: Ireland and the Caribbean (Exhibition Launch)'
description: "The Barbados Museum & Historical Society is thrilled to be hosting the exhibition Entangled Islands:\nIreland and the Caribbean, from October 2024 February 2025. \n\nThis exhibition delves into the deep and complex historical connections between Ireland and the Caribbean. These ties date back to the 17th century when Irish indentured labourers were among the thousands transported to work on Caribbean\nislands under English control. Over time, many Irish individuals rose to influential roles in the region, becoming plantation owners and colonial governors.\n\nThe panels and stories in the exhibition explore the experiences of a diverse array of Irish people who traversed and settled in the Caribbean, while also addressing the shared histories of colonisation and resistance. Irelands own fight for independence has resonated deeply with Caribbean political movements, and many Irish men and women have stood in solidarity with the challenges faced by Caribbean nations. Entangled Islands traces this long and multifaceted history through 19 key figures, ranging from merchants and enslavers to poets and journalists, highlighting the enduring links between the two regions.\n\nThis exhibition is open to the public from October 25 th 2024."

reasoning: The channel title 'The Barbados Museum & Historical Society' is an exact match. The description explicitly states 'Welcome to the official channel...' and confirms the channel belongs to the institution. The content is directly related to the museum's function as a heritage custodian, aligning perfectly with the GRP.HER.MUS entity type.
