text: 'At the entrance, there was a horse-shaped haniwa about 1 meter tall, and when I commented, "It''s huge," I was greeted cheerfully with the reply, "There are even more in the back."
The horse-shaped haniwa was at the very back of the exhibition room. Although it was not completely preserved, it was twice the size of a normal horse-shaped haniwa and is said to be one of the largest in Japan. I wonder how such a large haniwa was fired? Also on display were cylindrical haniwa with human faces attached, commonly known as "shio-gao haniwa." They are unique in appearance. What on earth were they used for with faces attached to cylinders?
There are many ancient tombs in the area, and I thought the exhibits would focus on the pottery and haniwa excavated there, but that was not the case. Rather, there were more exhibits related to medieval and early modern history, festivals, and other customs and customs, and the history of "Tamamura" from ancient times to the early modern period was passionately discussed. The amount of pamphlets casually placed next to the exhibits was astounding.
The old Nikko Reiboishi Road, which I drove along earlier, must have been incredibly busy in the past. I didn''t notice it because I couldn''t look away while driving, but apparently houses from that time still remain. I was given a pamphlet for walking around the town, so I''d like to take a stroll there someday.
Also, I had mistaken the Nikko Reiboishi for the Korean envoys, and wondered why they passed through here on their way from Korea to Edo. It turns out that every year, the Imperial Court sent envoys to Nikko Toshogu Shrine, which enshrines Ieyasu, to offer offerings. I had no idea such a thing actually happened until I saw the exhibits. The video they were showing was very interesting, and although the exhibition room isn''t very large, I found myself spending an hour there before I knew it. It was a wonderful museum.'

text: This historical museum is located within the Tamamura Town Cultural Center. It's free! Despite its small size, the crammed haniwa and pottery are reminiscent of Gunma, the ancient tomb kingdom! Tamamura Town's Gunpaiyama Tomb is home to many stories and artifacts from ancient to medieval times. The haniwa found in Kamiueno are the main attraction, but the historical relics of the development of new rice fields from the marshes and water transportation are also worth seeing. The museum's documentation is extremely detailed, and they generously provide free catalogs for special exhibitions! The summer 2024 special animal exhibition was packed with highlights, including picture scrolls, hanging scrolls, and even a sword called Mukokumaru. There was also a Nitta-e cat! There were also plenty of interesting items, like Japanese confectionery molds and apothecary's bags. There's also a well-organized collection of folklore materials. Workshops on Angin weaving, a Jomon period textile, are also held, demonstrating the museum's dedication to preservation efforts. Since it's inside the cultural center, there's ample parking and it's barrier-free, so it's a fun and easy-to-see place. The actual ship exhibit is impressive!
