text: 'The receptionist explained the town''s history and temples in detail and in an easy-to-understand way, which was very much appreciated by me, who knew nothing about it.

The exhibits included old children''s toys, and in the back room they were showing a DVD about the Murakami Kaizoku.

(I personally found the DVD easy to understand and interesting, so I became interested in the Murakami Kaizoku.)

But it was a shame that there were no exhibits about Onomichi.
|
||

It may have been difficult with the limited space, but with someone who was willing to explain things in such detail and in an easy-to-understand way, I would have liked to learn more about Onomichi from various angles.'

text: 'After enjoying the Onomichi Film Archive in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, I headed to the nearby Onomichi History Museum around 11:20 AM on Sunday.

It''s located about a 15-minute walk east from JR Onomichi Station.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Admission is 210 yen (tax included) for adults, but if you buy a combination ticket with the nearby Onomichi Film Archive, it''s a great deal at 520 yen (tax included).
|
||
|
||
|
||
The Onomichi History Museum is housed in the former Onomichi Bank headquarters, an Onomichi City Important Cultural Property.
|
||
|
||
|
||
As a result, there was a large, sturdy-looking safe right inside.
|
||
|
||
|
||
In the entrance hall, there was a reproduction of a folding screen depicting Onomichi during the Edo period, giving a good idea of the prosperity of Onomichi thanks to the Kitamaebune shipping industry.
|
||
|
||
|
||
The painting depicts many Kitamaebune ships sailing on the sea, a port, densely packed houses, and not just people but also dogs roaming the streets. (^_^)
|
||
|
||
Temples and shrines are just as numerous as they are today, and their density is said to be even greater than in Kyoto.
|
||
|
||
|
||
The museum staff are extremely knowledgeable about Onomichi''s history, and their kind explanations are truly excellent!
|
||
|
||
|
||
If we had had more time, I would have liked to listen to them for much longer.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Onomichi''s current long shopping street is said to have been a thriving post town during the Edo period, with the Sanyo Kaido road running through it. It also had a honjin (inn) where feudal lords would stay during their alternate attendance journeys to Edo.
|
||
|
||
|
||
And because it was spared war damage, it''s wonderful how the townscape from the Edo period remains intact.
|
||
|
||
|
||
There''s even a model of a Kitamae ship at the entrance, showing how the area prospered as a port of call for Kitamae ships back then.
|
||
|
||
|
||
The museum also had many materials related to Onomichi novelist Fumiko Hayashi.
|
||
|
||
|
||
It was also great to learn about Onomichi''s history through a video♪
|
||
|
||
|
||
Onomichi faces the sea, with an island beyond it and mountains nearby. Because of this, vacation homes began to be built in the mountains, and the scenic beauty of the sea made it a popular place for literary novelists and others to live there.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Apparently, Fumiko Hayashi and Naoya Shiga also lived here.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Later, it became a popular filming location, including Ozu''s Tokyo Story, Yujiro Ishihara''s "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" (It''s Tough Being a Man) and the Tora-san films.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Onomichi is a wonderful city with a rich history.
|
||
|
||

||
The Onomichi History Museum offers a fascinating look into Onomichi''s history, including video clips. The museum staff provide detailed, friendly, and easy-to-understand explanations. I highly recommend it!'
