text: Admission is free. I don't think there's any other facility like this that you can enter for free. It's very quiet, so you can take your time. There are many Jomon pottery exhibits. There were photos of excavated human bones. Apparently people were buried with their knees hugged, and that's how the photos looked. There are exhibits from the Jomon period and some Ainu items. I think it's definitely worth a visit if you have time.

text: 'This is my first visit on May 25, 2025. When I visited the Chitose City Buried Cultural Center a while ago, I heard that the real clay mask, a nationally designated important cultural property that was unearthed almost in its entirety from the Mamachi ruins in Chitose City, is on display here at the Hokkaido Buried Cultural Property Center (the clay mask on display at the Chitose City Buried Cultural Center is a replica), so I visited to see the real thing.

It is located alone in front of a forest at the back of a quiet residential area. It is closed on Mondays, but admission is free, and the exhibition floor is located past the lobby on the first floor. Since it is a prefectural facility, buried cultural properties from all over the prefecture are lined up (although I''m not sure how the exhibits are separated from those at local facilities...).

There are also "Bibi-chan (clay product shaped like an animal)" from the Bimi 4 Site in Chitose, and "Kakku (hollow clay figurine)" from the Chobonaiino Site in Minamikayabe (now Hakodate City) (although both are replicas).

You can see what life was like during the "Post-Jomon Period" which continued from the Jomon Period and was only experienced in Hokkaido. 🧐. (There was also a poster for the qualification exam for "buried cultural property surveyor", and I had never known such a qualification existed.)'

This museum specializes in Hokkaido''s Jomon period. It''s true, as rice was not cultivated in Hokkaido, that there was no Yayoi period.

||
|
||
Instead of the Yayoi period, Hokkaido experienced the Epi-Jomon period, followed by the Okhotsk culture, the Satsumon period, which still had strong Jomon influences even in the Heian period, and the Ainu culture period, which lasted from the Kamakura period until the Edo period.
|
||
|
||
|
||
However, since there doesn''t seem to have been any clear differences between the people who lived in each era until Hokkaido became part of Japan, I feel that the Ainu people inherited Jomon values to a greater or lesser extent.
|
||
|
||
|
||
While the Ainu exhibits are available at the nearby Hokkaido Museum, I wanted to learn more about Hokkaido, a historically connected and consistent region.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Also, I was stunned by the sheer scale of the Sannai-Maruyama ruins in Aomori. I think the sheer scale of the Jomon network, which extended beyond northeastern Hokkaido, would be even more impressive if the trade in jade and obsidian revealed a clear connection between the Jomon period and its neighbors.
|
||
|
||
|
||
At the Sannai-Maruyama site, a large number of plate-shaped clay figurines in the shape of children were unearthed, suggesting that they were treasured, but pottery with children''s handprints and footprints has also been excavated at Jomon sites in Hokkaido, and it''s nice to get a sense of the roots of the Japanese people.

||
|
||
|
||
Also, I think that many Jomon-loving enthusiasts are also fans of pottery and clay figurines, but I was reminded that I am more of an obsidian lover, so I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had been able to process obsidian or buy it as a souvenir.
|
||
|
||
But it was good to learn that obsidian varies greatly depending on its place of origin.'
