Do not go now. Try later in the year or next year when it is actually open. Try the (excellent) naval museum or the Centro Culturo Banco de Brasil instead.

||
This national museum advertises itself as open, but the main museum is actually completely closed. There is only a temporary exhibit open, including some Peruvian art and small number of historic carriages. However I learnt pretty much nothing about the history of Brazil. Hopefully the main museum will open soon because the building has lots of potential and looks attractive from the outside.

||
|
||
As an aside, I didn't really understand why there were so many museum staff working given that there is so little open. For example there were no less than four people staffing the front desk for essentially no visitors visiting the small temporary exhibit.

text: The main reason to visit this museum is to see the travelling exhibition on the struggle for Black equality across

||
the world from centuries ago until today. Done in partnership with various international philanthropic groups, it is
|
||
presented in English as well as Portuguese. Other than this however, no other significant exhibits were open to be viewed. So
|
||
without the exhibit I described, it would be nothing to see except a few historic coaches and sedan chairs. Entry was
|
||
free

Great Museum with the right balance of Brazilian history and diversity.
|
||
|
||
I visited this place many years ago and it has nothing lost of the fascination and details. Our sons loved it and enjoy the family friendly trip.
|
||
|
||
The Museum is well organized and safe. During the weekend the Center in Rio is empty and it is strongly suggested to arrive by taxi.

there are multiple levels. You will need at least two hours to thoroughly explore the entire place because it's huge.
