transcript_text: We are standing here in the old dining room of Biljoen Castle. A sixteenth-century castle which was
|
||
purchased in 1661 by Alexander van Spaen. And he was also the one who ordered these tapestries. As can be seen from
|
||
his coat of arms in the upper edge of all the pieces. This room is composed of five different tapestries. The most
|
||
important are the three pieces with the children playing. The children playing on the tapestries are in beautifully
|
||
landscaped parks, where rich fountains spray upwards and the children occupy themselves with walking their dog, playing
|
||
with a tame bird or making music. What is really nice about these pieces is that you can clearly see that they have
|
||
been cut to size for this room. Various series of tapestries were used and have now been turned on to create to form
|
||
a single visual whole. Careful consideration was given to keeping the signature of the weaver always in the corner.
|
||
The tapestries are made up of different series and even within that series, there has been cutting and pasting. This
|
||
is particularly evident in the forest landscape with a wide view, where the various chickens are not all original,
|
||
but one chicken was added later, which is clearly visible in the different coloured ground. Biljoen Castle is not

||

transcript_text: We are standing here in the wedding hall of Gouda town hall and what I like so much is that you can
|
||
keep discovering. Everywhere you look there are new plants and flowers, animals, birds, both exotic and native. The
|
||
forest landscape you see behind me is an enormous tapestry, woven in 1642 by the Gouda tapestries weaver David Ruffelaer.
|
||
He made this with a workshop where dozens of weavers sat at the loom for months, sometimes even years on the loom
|
||
to weave this with wool and silk. Everywhere you look, animals are crawling through the forest, including a fox, a
|
||
turkey, cranes and even a tiny lion trying to catch a hare. And as you can see, weaving animals was not easy. Weavers
|
||
had to work on it for hours in a very precise way and that sometimes results in some strange animals, such as the
|
||
small lion and the goose with three fractures in its neck. Tapestries are somewhat of an overlooked medium in the
|
||
Netherlands. We have a huge number of them, but they are often hidden away in dark depots. With the Corpus wandtapijten

transcript_text: Together with The Nivaagaard Collection, I’m researching their collection of Dutch and Flemish Old

||
Master paintings. The aim of this research is the publication of a collection catalogue of all these paintings. One
|
||
of the case studies is Rembrandt's Portrait of a 39-year-old Woman. RKD Research has a tool that allows you to search
|
||
the database by image. That’s what I did with the Nivaagaard’s painting. I found about 20 old photographs of the painting.
|
||
On some of these old photographs, we can see that the wart, now so clearly visible under her lower lip, was retouched
|
||
away. This means that while Rembrandt really tried to portray the woman the way she was, in the 19th century they
|
||
thought differently about that.

||
Armando, who died in 2018 at the age of 88, was a versatile artist and a true multi talent. As heir to Armando’s entire

artistic oeuvre, the Armando Foundation is not only responsible for his paintings and sculptures, but also for his literature,

tv-programmes and music. This richly varied oeuvre can be regarded as a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, rooted in his experiences
|
||
living close to Kamp Amersfoort during World War II. The legacy of Armando also comprises an extensive library, photographic

documentation and his personal archive with scrapbooks, diaries, manuscripts, notebooks and sketches.
|
||
|
||
|
||
The many notebooks with preliminary sketches for paintings, sculptures and drawings offer more insight into the extensive
|
||
oeuvre, as do the scrapbooks with correspondence, newspaper articles, snapshots and other documentation Armando himself
|
||
compiled. The archive also includes ring binders filled with portrait photographs showing Armando through the years,
|
||
pamphlets, notes of meetings and opening speeches for exhibitions. Through these the archive presents an overview starting
|
||
with Armando’s Zero-period in the sixties until his final years.
|
||
|
||
|
||
Remarkable are the pictures Armando himself took of his surroundings or of objects he sometimes literally used for his
|
||
paintings. The archive also contains a number of artworks made especially for Armando by befriended artists, such as
|
||
Klaas Gubbels. At the beginning of July 2021, the archive was moved to the RKD in The Hague, where it will be recorded
|
||
and further examined.'
