This art museum uses the former Iwamizawa Police Station.
|
||
It displays works by Matsushima Masayuki, as well as special exhibitions.
|
||
The other day, the exhibition space was for Matsushima Masayuki's works on the first floor and the special exhibition on the second floor, but four years ago the special exhibition was on the first floor, so it seems to change depending on the content of the exhibition.
|
||
Different works by Matsushima Masayuki were exhibited last time, so they seem to be changed regularly.
|
||
The admission fee is 210 yen, but you can also look at the art books on the second floor as much as you like, so I think you'll enjoy it if you have time.
|
||
|
||
The building is old, so it's good for people who like retro things like me, but be careful as the air conditioning is not very good.
|
||
It's not impossible to walk from the station, but it is a little far.

text: I visited Iwamizawa City for work in July 2024, but I hadn't really had a chance to see what it was like. So, after

searching for art museums, archives, and museums on Google Maps, I decided to visit this one. The building, built in
|
||
1932 from reinforced concrete, occupies the former Iwamizawa Police Station. When I happened to visit, I heard the sound
|
||
of violins, which I thought was background music, but it turned out to be a live rehearsal. Masayuki Matsushima's exhibition
|
||
featured many landscapes of ports both in Japan and abroad. One particularly striking image was the powerful view of
|
||
Sakurajima over Kagoshima City (zoomed in for a closer look), likely seen from Shiroyama. Reading his brief biography,
|
||
I felt a sense of affinity with him, as he attended the same elementary school as my grandfather, siblings, parents,
|
||
and myself. I wasn't very good at music in elementary school, but my father's cousin was a violinist, and I remembered
|
||
that before the war, he had a practice room on the top floor of his concrete home/store facing Minami-Shijo Street in
|
||
Sapporo. I decided to listen to some music after viewing the paintings. The music was very familiar and it was great.

||
I think this is a great facility that has events that allow citizens to interact with each other through art and music.

This Matsushima Masayuki Memorial Museum was originally the Iwamizawa Police Station.

||

As the building aged, it became difficult to maintain the detention facilities and other facilities, and it could no longer function as a police station.
