Last night we went to the Opera and highly recommend that you support UCT-Opera, it''s amazing... Opera was so much fun...
We went to see, Die Fledermaus is a brilliant Cape Town adaption of a very modern opera, you will love it...
Moden clothing, they even speak in English bringing the audience into this fast paced comedy; if you have never been to an Opera, then this should be your first...
Raise a glass and escape into a world of glamour, intrigue, and sparkling music as Opera UCT presents Johann Strauss II’s effervescent operetta Die Fledermaus.

With mistaken identities, masked revenge, and a whirl wind of laughter, we had a great time (did not expect to laugh so much)...

Highly recommend this as a fantastic Friday night out in Cape Town (Friday 24th,2025). Tickets still available...

#TheBaxterHistory
The Baxter Theatre Centre, designed by Jack Barnett, opened on 1 August 1977.
It came into being as the result of a bequest from the late Dr W. Duncan Baxter who, in his will, bequeathed an amount of money to the University of Cape Town for the purpose of establishing a theatre which would, in the words of Dr Baxter, “develop and cultivate the arts in Cape Town and the adjacent districts”.
Since its opening in 1977 the complex has continued to provide a stage for all types of professional entertainment – music, drama, ballet, opera and intimate theatre. We endeavour to present and host the best of South African performing arts. The objective is to reflect the cultures of all the people of South Africa on our stages and in our foyers and galleries. We envisage a vibrant cultural centre developing an interactive relationship with our local and university communities. We strive to present cutting-edge and major works from South Africa and masterpieces from the international repertoire.
Even through the difficult years of racial segregation its doors remained open to everyone and it thrived, drawing on indigenous talent and creating a uniquely South African theatre tradition.
Pillar of hope during the apartheid era.
Built in 1976, the Baxter was a pillar of hope during the apartheid era. By leveraging its strong relationship with UCT, the theatre was able to present multiracial, progressive work at a time when all other non-racial interactivity was banned or censored. The first interracial kiss ever on a South African stage took place during the Baxter’s first production of Miss Julie in 1985, while today our version of Mies Julie storms theatres all around the world.'

text: 'From a visitor''s perspective, the University of Cape Town is a massive campus which gave me Aalto University vibes. The campus consists of various buildings. Some buildings are more interesting than others as they have an almost castle style architecture. The plants swallowing some buildings is an interesting touch. I don’t think students require a gym since the lengthy walk from building to building is quite a workout. Set-up is unique ranging from lights resembling upside down candles to a tunnel engulfed in graffiti. Campus encourages recycling and possesses several dustbins. Prestine environment (probably cause of all the dustbins). Furthermore, there are kiosks and a cafeteria. I recommend tagging a water bottle along as campus walk can become thirsty. The University of Cape Town knows how to make students comfortable and has set a high bar for what a tertiary instituition should be. They even conveniently have an on site store. Finally, the sprinkles on the ice-cream: there is a lovely view of Table Mountain.'

description: "The University of Cape Town (UCT) hosted the 2025 Annual Staff Awards at the Baxter Theatre Centre on 24 November, marking the eighth year of the integrated celebration and the second under Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela’s leadership. More than 300 staff members across PASS, Academic, Technical and Research sectors were recognised in an event that reflects UCT’s commitment to unity and excellence. \n\nFrom long-service milestones to new and evolving award categories, the evening honoured the people whose work underpins the institution’s reputation and its standing as the continent’s leading university. \n\nThe event also foregrounded the human stories behind institutional achievement. Among the most moving moments was the recognition of 45-year long-service recipient Terence Swarts, who spoke of UCT as both workplace and family, a place that shaped his life across decades. Awardees from transformation, creative works, social responsiveness and service excellence categories reflected on the impact of their efforts – from reimagining student success pathways to building community-centred urban projects. \n\n#UCTStaffAwards #UCTExcellence #Vision2030 #UCTTransfromation #UCTResearch"

title: Dr Medeé Rall’s lifelong legacy of learning
description: "For 50 years, Dr Medeé Rall’s life has been intertwined with the University of Cape Town (UCT) – a journey that began at age 14 when she arrived as a ballet student at the UCT Ballet School. What followed was a career defined by an unwavering commitment to expanding access to knowledge beyond the boundaries of the university. \n\nAfter early years in teaching, Rall found her calling in adult education, becoming part of the first intake of UCT’s Diploma in Adult Education. Her literacy work in KwaLanga and Rondebosch grounded her in community-based learning. \n\nHer work later expanded into the Iziko South African Museum, where she developed educational programmes in partnership with UCT, using fossils, rock art, astronomy, geology and cultural collections to unlock curiosity and confidence in adult learners. \n\nIn 2003, she joined UCT’s Centre for Extra-Mural Studies (CEMS) full-time, where she transformed Summer School and public short courses into flagship programmes of lifelong learning. Under her leadership, thousands engaged with diverse fields, from paleontology to poetry, archaeology to astronomy. She curated excursions across the country, from Cederberg rock art sites to the telescopes of Sutherland, and facilitated international study tours, most recently with a group from Hong Kong in 2025. \n\nAs she retires, she hopes the culture of lifelong learning remains central to UCT’s identity, rooted in curiosity, creativity and openness. \n\n#UCTRetirees #UCTSummerSchool #LifelongLearning #AdultEducation #UCTLegacy #UCTCommunityImpact #UCTHumanities #PublicEducation #IzikoMuseum #UCTTransformation"

title: Prof Mosedi Namane’s UCT legacy
description: "Professor Mosedi Namane, one of the University of Cape Town’s first Black African medical graduates (MBChB, 1990), has spent her career transforming medical education from the lecture hall to the heart of the community. As a Family Physician and Professor in UCT’s Division of Family Medicine, Namane helped pioneer community-based learning through the Vanguard Student Learning Centre in Bonteheuwel, a space where students learn medicine by serving real patients. \n\nNow retiring after nearly four decades of service, Namane reflects on how she bridged the gap between academia and township health realities. Her leadership helped redefine UCT’s curriculum to align with South Africa’s primary healthcare model, planting the seeds for a more equitable health system. “The systems are rooted, the seeds have been planted,” she says. “They just need to be nurtured for the future.”"

description: "The University of Cape Town (UCT) hosted the “Values in Higher Education Conversations” on 15 October 2025, ahead of the upcoming national Values20 (V20) Summit. Led by UCT Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela, the gathering brought together higher education leaders, including chancellors, vice-chancellors and Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidents from universities across South Africa. The discussions explored how values-based leadership can shape a more ethical, equitable and sustainable higher education landscape. \n\n The event forms part of South Africa’s preparation for the 2025 G20 Presidency and its national V20 initiative under the theme “living values”. \n\nThrough critical dialogue on leadership, curriculum design and institutional culture, the conversation challenged universities to move beyond merely stating their values but to also actively live them in teaching, research and governance. \n\n \n#UCTExcellence #UCTSocialResponsiveness #ChooseUCT #Vision2030 #UCTValuesConversations #V20Summit #LivingValues #HigherEducationLeadership #ValuesBasedSociety #UCTVision2030"

description: 'The Sarah Baartman documentary depicts her life beyond the lens of exploitation, highlighting her depth, multilingualism, and connection to Africa. It features Professor Nomusa Makhubu, Professor June Bam-Hutchison, Professor Elelwani Ramugondo, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela, and Tauriq Jenkins. The film examines the injustices she endured and prompts reflection on institutional complicity in histories of erasure. It positions the Sarah Baartman Hall as a space of dignity and African identity, showing how the hall now carries her name as a symbol of justice, belonging and the collective achievements of every graduate who crosses its stage.

For Associate Professor Langerman, the curation reflects a century of artistic invention, critical discourse, and social consciousness. \n\nMore than a retrospective, the show foregrounds the school’s pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s art landscape. It asks us to consider how art reflects, disrupts, and reimagines society. Visitors will encounter formative student works – such as those by Marlene Dumas, now one of the world’s most acclaimed artists – alongside archival materials that trace Michaelis’ growth in mediums, ideas, and politics across a hundred years. \n\nUltimately, the exhibition invites reflection on the past while opening space to imagine the future of Michaelis, as it continues to nurture voices that challenge, inspire, and transform. The exhibition runs until 8 October 2025 at the Michaelis art gallery. \n\n#HeritageMonth #UCTVision2030 #HeritageMonth #TransformationAtUCT #100Years100Objects #ArtAndHistory #Michaelis100"

description: "UCT’s spring graduation was more than a ceremony; it was a celebration of resilience, sacrifice, and triumph. Graduates reflected on the defining moments of their UCT journeys: the long nights of study, the heartbreak of losing loved ones, and the determination to keep moving forward. \n\nWith lecturers who pushed, mentored, and stood beside them, the path was made a little lighter. On graduation day, pride and relief shone bright as years of hard work and perseverance culminated in an unforgettable moment of achievement. title: UCT Vice-Chancellor Mosa Moshabela on values-driven leadership
description: "University of Cape Town (UCT) Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela says leadership is not only about processes, but about people, values and foresight. \n\n“Management is doing things right. Leadership is doing the right things,” he explains, reflecting on the need to centre integrity and listening in governance. \n\nLooking ahead, Prof Moshabela adds that planning for the university’s future extends well beyond the present generation and demands commitment to the UCT of tomorrow.\n\nWatch the full reflective conversation with journalist Nikiwe Bikitsha on the UCT website: https://www.news.uct.ac.za/article/-2025-09-01-its-possible-to-do-the-impossible-at-uct\n\n#ChooseUCT #UCTExcellence #UCTGovernance #Strategy2030 #MosaMoshabela #UCTVC #UCTManagement"

title: 'Unlocking student potential: UCT Vice-Chancellor calls for a culture of support'
description: "Reflecting on his first-year in office, University of Cape Town (UCT) Vice-Chancellor Prof Mosa Moshabela underscores the importance of nurturing gifted and talented students, many of whom face barriers that can slow their progress. He stresses that these obstacles – from financial strain to academic challenges – should not define students’ potential but rather be addressed with deliberate institutional support. \n\nMoshabela further highlights that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but an act of courage and resilience. \n\n#ChooseUCT #UCTStudents #StudentSuccess #UCTStudentLife #Strategy2030 #MosaMoshabela #UCTVC #UCTExcellence #UCTStudentWellness"

title: 'Putting people first: Prof Mosa Moshabela’s strategy for UCT’s future'
description: "For Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela, the first year at the helm of the University of Cape Town (UCT) has been as much about people as it has been about policy. In a conversation with journalist Nikiwe Bikitsha on 13 August 2025, he reflected on the paradox of time, a year that felt both fleeting and weighty, and the challenge of leading an institution defined by its diversity, yet often fractured by it. His answer has been to put people first: “The essence of a university is people, their minds, their hearts, their motivations.” Listening, kindness, and ubuntu, he insists, must guide UCT forward. \n\nThis ethos underpins Strategy 2030, UCT’s renewed five-year plan for 2026 to 2030. While the strategy retains Vision 2030’s core purpose, “to unleash human potential for a fair and just society,” it also expands UCT’s mission to include innovation and entrepreneurship alongside teaching, research and social responsiveness. Moshabela says, the real measure of success will not be rankings or reports, but whether students and staff can see themselves in UCT’s future. His call is clear: to transform complexity into unity, and diversity into a strength that shapes generations to come. \n\n #ChooseUCT #Strategy2030 #MosaMoshabela #UCTVC #UCTExcellence"

title: 'Ikey Tigers Women’s Rugby: Full squad milestone and world cup selection'
description: "The Ikey Tigers women’s rugby team has hit a milestone this season, taking the field with a full fifteens squad for the first time. Assistant coach Natasha Hofmeester attributes this milestone to a strategy rooted in accessibility, using social friendlies and tag rugby to introduce new players and expand participation. \n\nWhile the team has primarily competed in traditional rugby, tag rugby has become a dynamic offshoot where Londiwe Tshabalala aims to excel. Tshabalala has been selected to represent South Africa at the 2026 Tag Rugby World Cup in Australia; but needs donation to get there. \n\nYou can support Londiwe Tshabalala’s journey to the 2025 Tag Rugby World Cup and help make her dream a reality by donating: \n\nhttps://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/support-the-tagboks-tag-world-cup-2026 \n\n \n\n#WomensMonth #ChooseUCT #UCTExcellence #UCTIkeysTigers #TagWorldCup2026 #TagRugby #WomenInRugby #TagBoks #RugbySA #UCTSports"

title: '59th TB Davie Memorial Lecture: The power of calling in'
description: "In a society quick to cancel, Associate Professor Loretta J Ross used the TB Davie Memorial Lecture to present a subtler, yet profoundly impactful approach – to accountability. Her core message centred on “calling in,” cultivating a culture of accountability rooted in love and integrity and rejecting the reflex to exile those who cause harm. \n\nDrawing on decades of activism, Associate Professor Ross outlined her ‘Five Cs’ continuum: calling out, cancelling, calling in, calling on and calling it off, as a framework for addressing harm without replicating the punitive systems we seek to dismantle. In her call to action, justice must not only hold people accountable but also believe in their capacity to learn, repair and grow. \n\n\n\n#ChooseUCT #Vision2030 #TBDavieLecture #LorettaJRoss #AcademicFreedom #UCTNews #HumanRights #SocialJustice #InclusiveJustice #UCTEvents"
