Being born into a family that was diverse in terms of gender, race, class, and sexuality, I know by experience what it means to be silenced and marginalized. By collecting the life stories of (colonial) migrant families, I encourage them to break the silence and become the owner of their own (hi)stories. Next to these projects, I have finalized my PhD project on family, identity, and survival strategies in the life stories of Javanese-Surinamese women in the Netherlands. My program 'Tracing Your Roots' invites young adults in the former Dutch East Indies to search their roots and their ancestors, thus encouraging them to envision their own ways of being and doing.
