"about": "I'm an oral historian, researcher, educator, and heritage professional. My experience & expertise: Oral history & qualitative (field based) ~ Higher education ~ Community based projects such as Tracing Your Roots and story telling workshops ~ curating exhibitions ~ My activities: As an oral historian, I collect life stories of (colonial) migrant families and their offspring in oral history research, books, blogs, and exhibitions. Being born into a family that was diverse in terms of gender, race, class, and sexuality, I know by experience what it means to be silenced and marginalized. By collecting the life stories of (colonial) migrant families, I encourage them to break the silence and become the owner of their own (hi)stories. Next to these projects, I have finalized my PhD project on family, identity, and survival strategies in the life stories of Javanese-Surinamese women in the Netherlands. My program 'Tracing Your Roots' invites young adults in the former Dutch East Indies to search their roots and their ancestors, thus encouraging them to envision their own ways of being and doing. Tracing Your Roots resulted in the exhibition 'Van Daar & Van Hier' in the Limburgs Museum, a theatre play, and a podcast series, while there is still more to come! See www.verhalenoverleven.org My qualities: Enthusiastic, empathic, dedicated, persistent, and hard working. Learning only occurs outside your comfortzone, Nothing is impossible until it is done! We do so by hosting story telling workshops, providing oral history trainings, and sharing their stories in books, articles, and blogs, on websites and in exhibitions. By making untold (hi)stories heard, we hope to enable communities to regain ownership over their own histories. In 2017, we launched our curriculum Ancestors unKnown: an educational tool that encourages students (10-14 years) to discover their ancestors and gain access to shared (colonia) histories. In 2019, we launched Tracing Your Roots: a, similar program designed for yound adults with roots in the former Dutch Indies. Show less"
