The attraction included in the package ticket... Personally, I wasn't particularly impressed with this one. If you didn't buy the package ticket, I don't think it's worth going in.

This museum is located in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Here you can learn about the history and culture of Tomonoura, a scenic spot representative of the Setouchi region.

It was built in 1988 on the site of a former castle called Tomo Castle. Built on a small hill, it offers beautiful views.
|
||
Admission is 150 yen, and the museum is closed on Mondays. It will be closed for renovations from mid-December 2024.
|
||
There are exhibits on the history of Tomonoura, people associated with the area, the Korean envoys, local festivals, and more. Photography is prohibited inside the museum.
|
||
As it's the remains of a castle, you can receive a castle seal at the reception upon request.
|
||
Access is a 6-minute walk from the Tomonoura bus stop. If you're driving, the Historical and Folklore Museum parking lot (25 spaces) is convenient, but it may be full during peak seasons.
|
||
Because it's located tucked away along a narrow, single-lane road, it may be less crowded than parking lots along the main road.
|
||
It's located on a small hill, so you'll eventually have to climb a slope or stairs to get there.

This museum stands on a hill just up the hill from Tomonoura.
|
||
It is located in a scenic spot with a panoramic view of Tomonoura.
|
||
|
||
Admission is 150 yen. Inside the museum, you can learn about the history of Tomonoura, which flourished as a port for waiting for the tide, as well as local products such as Homeishu, and festivals and other events.
|
||
|
||
On the second floor, there is also an exhibit on Miyagi Michio, a musician with ties to Tomo Town.
|
||
|
||
Overall, it can feel a bit unassuming, but it is a good place to get some background information about sightseeing in Tomo.
|
||
|
||
Photography is not permitted inside the museum, on either the first or second floor. Please note that there are signs prohibiting photography posted throughout.

It was built on the hilltop of the ruins of Tomo Castle as a commemorative project for the 70th anniversary of Fukuyama City's incorporation. Historical materials from ancient times to the early modern period, as well as folk materials related to the Otebi Shinto ritual and Oyumi Shinto ritual are on permanent display, and it is affectionately known as the "House of Waiting for the Tide."
