Bibliotheek met meer dan 100 jaar aan archief. Ook moderne leesboeken zijn in de collectie aanwezig, erg compleet en uitgebreid, veel Afrikaans talig.

Studentenlidmaatschap voor de bibliotheek is slechts 6 euro per jaar.
|
||
Jaarlijks wordt er de cursus Afrikaans gegeven voor beginners. Erg aan te raden

||
De maatschappij waarin we leven wordt steeds meer gepolariseerd. Het discours over wereldgebeurtenissen, politiek, religie, sport, eigenlijk over elk denkbaar onderwerp, wordt snel gedomineerd door enkele extreme standpunten. De debatten op alle platforms, of het nu op sociale media is of in de opinieruimtes van websites en publicaties met een traditionele journalistieke basis, zijn verhit en bitter. Er is een onuitgesproken verwachting dat iedereen het ene of het andere standpunt moet steunen. Het is ofwel “ja” of “nee”, juist of onjuist. Het recht op vrijheid van meningsuiting is waardevol en moet worden gekoesterd. Iedereen heeft recht op zijn mening, hoe extreem die ook mag zijn. Toch lijkt het alsof alleen de extreme meningen nu in de wereld worden gehoord. Waar zijn de gematigden? Waarom kiezen zij ervoor dit recht niet uit te oefenen? Waarom zwijgen zij en welke gevaren brengt dit met zich mee voor de samenleving in het algemeen, maar vooral voor Zuid-Afrika?

||
Ons is nie almal so nie.
|
||
Die samelewing waarin ons leef, word toenemend gepolariseer. Die diskoers oor wêreldgebeure, politiek, godsdiens, sport, trouens enige denkbare saak, word vinnig oorheers deur enkele, ekstreme standpunte. Die debatte op al wat ’n platform is, hetsy op sosiale media of in die meningsruimtes van webwerwe en publikasies met ’n tradisionele joernalistieke onderbou is hitsig en bitsig. Daar is ’n onuitgesproke verwagting dat elke mens die een of die ander standpunt moet ondersteun. Dis Ja, of nee, Reg of weg. Die reg tot Vryheid van spraak moet gekoester word. Elkeen is geregtig op sy mening, hoe ekstreem dit ook mag wees. Tog wil dit blyk asof dit slegs die ekstreme menings is wat nou in die wêreld gehoor word. Waar is die gematigdes? Waarom kies hulle om nie hierdie kosbare reg uit te oefen nie? Waarom swyg hulle en watter gevare hou hierdie stilswye vir die samelewing in die breë en vir Suid-Afrika in besonder in?

||
The society in which we live is becoming increasingly polarized. The discourse on world events, politics, religion, sports, in fact any conceivable matter, is quickly dominated by a few extreme viewpoints. The debates on all platforms, whether on social media or in the opinion spaces of websites and publications with a traditional journalistic foundation, are heated and bitter. There is an unspoken expectation that everyone must support one viewpoint or another. It’s either “yes” or “no”, Right or wrong. The right to freedom of speech is valuable and should be cherished. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however extreme it may be. Yet it seems as if it is only the extreme opinions that are now heard in the world. Where are the moderates? Why do they choose not to exercise this right? Why are they silent and what dangers does this pose for society at large, but especially for South Africa?

Bij vlagen woedend, sterk feministisch maar ook met veel (inktzwarte) humor schrijft Kamfer over een geschiedenis van complexe familieverhoudingen en hoe je een dochter opvoedt in het Zuid-Afrika van nu.

||
Op betrokken, uitdagende en toch ook vaak luchtige wijze confronteert zij haar lezers met de realiteit van marginalisering, armoede en geweld, niet van buitenaf bekeken maar beschreven van binnenuit en vanuit eigen ervaring.
|
||
|
||
Kamfers activistische inslag spat vanaf het eerste gedicht van de pagina af, maar Chinatown bevat ook juist intieme gedichten over liefde, familie en ouderschap. Dit alles resulteert in Kamfers meest uitgesproken bundel tot nu toe.
|
||
|
||
Op 27 mei gaat Ama van Dantzig, sociaal ondernemer en co-founder van innovatiestudio Dr. Monk, in gesprek met Ronelda Kamfer en haar vertaler Alfred Schaffer, aan wie voor zijn eigen poëzie (o.a. Mens Dier Ding uit 2014 en Wie was ik uit 2020) in december 2020 de P.C. Hooftprijs is toegekend. Deze prijs wordt in mei 2021 uitgereikt.

Langzaamaan komen de rechercheurs tot de conclusie dat de zaken verbonden zijn door de donkerste drift die er bestaat: hebzucht.
|
||
|
||
Kaapse wijn, hebzucht en Bennie Griessel: het zijn de ideale ingrediënten voor de nieuwe thriller van de internationale succesauteur Deon Meyer, Donkerdrif.
|
||
|
||
Meyer (1958) werd geboren in Paarl in de Kaapse wijnstreek. Hij groeide op in Klerksdorp, tussen de mijnen van de provincie Noordwest. Na zijn diensttijd en zijn studie aan de universiteit van Potchefstroom begon hij als verslaggever bij Die Volksblad in Bloemfontein. Daarna zou hij nog werken als persvoorlichter, tekstschrijver, creative director, webmanager, internet strategist en consultant. Meyer begon pas serieus te schrijven toen hij de dertig reeds was gepasseerd.
|
||
|
||
Inmiddels behoort hij tot de top van de internationale misdaadauteurs. Hij kreeg voor zijn boeken meerdere prijzen, onder meer in Frankrijk, Zweden en Duitsland. In 2012 werd zijn thriller 13 uur door Vrij Nederland Detective en Thrillergids uitgeroepen tot Thriller van het Jaar.
|
||
|
||
Wat Meyers boeken zo weergaloos spannend maakt, is de combinatie van humor, snelheid, het schitterende Zuid-Afrikaanse landschap, de zwaarte van het verleden en de uitdagingen van het heden. Zijn personages vertegenwoordigen alle kleuren van de regenboognatie. Deon Meyer heeft de vinger aan de pols van de tijd.
|
||
|
||
Op 29 april wordt Deon Meyer geïnterviewd door zijn Nederlandse collega-schrijver Peter Römer, de man achter de nieuwe Baantjers. Römer schrijft ook op zichzelf staande romans. In januari verscheen van hem Het meesterstuk, een roman die de liefhebbers van Dan Brown beslist zal aanspreken. Deon Meyers vaste Nederlandse vertalers, Karina van Santen en Martine Vosmaer, komen langs om te vertellen wat zijn romans vanuit hún perspectief zo onweerstaanbaar maakt.

Tijdens de lezing vertelt Michael over zijn historisch onderzoek naar de invloed van het kolonialisme op runderen, koeien en ander vee in zuidelijk Afrika van circa 1652 tot de jaren 1980, met de nadruk op de zeventiende tot en met de negentiende eeuw. Michael probeert een geschiedenis van zuidelijk Afrika te schrijven door de “ogen van koeien”.
|
||
|
||
Michael’s proefschrift is gebaseerd op archief- en ander onderzoeks materiaal uit Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini (voorheen Swaziland), Zuid-Afrika, Zimbabwe, Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk dat hij in 2018 en 2019 bestudeerde. Michael’s aanpak omvatte ook dat hij een maand onderdook in de kudde vrij rondlopende runderen in de Karoo, Zuid-Afrika.
|
||
|
||
De lezing wordt ingeleid door Michael’s co-promotor Harry Wels, verbonden aan het Afrika-Studiecentrum Leiden en de VU. Na afloop zal Harry de vragen van het digitale publiek bespreken met de lezinggever.

Harry Kalmer werkte als copy writer; voor zijn advertenties heeft hij meerdere prijzen gewonnen. Daarnaast was hij sinds de jaren tachtig actief als dramaturg en schrijver van romans en korte verhalen. Zijn toneelwerk was al snel succesvol. Voor misschien wel zijn bekendste stuk, Die Bram Fischer-wals, werd hij bijvoorbeeld bekroond met de Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award 2013 en de Adelaide Tambo Award for Celebrating Human Rights through the Arts 2014. Maar als schrijver van romans en verhalen werd Kalmer lang beschouwd als een literaire randfiguur. Hij leek moeilijk te plaatsen doordat elk nieuw boek van zijn hand anders was.
|
||
|
||
Brede erkenning kwam er pas voor zijn voorlaatste roman ’n Duisend stories oor Johannesburg (2014), een dik, rijk, actueel, afwisselend en diepmenselijk boek dat genomineerd werd voor vrijwel alle grote Afrikaanse literaire prijzen en die (in een Engelse vertaling door Kalmer zelf) bekroond werd met de Barry Rönge-prijs 2018. Ook In ’n land sonder voëls werd positief ontvangen en postuum genomineerd voor de KykNet-Rapport-prijs 2020.
|
||
|
||
In land zonder vogels is een zogenaamde ‘dystopische roman’. Door het verhaal in de toekomst te situeren levert de schrijver commentaar op zijn eigen tijd.
|
||
|
||
In een wereld waarin alles gecontroleerd wordt, raakt hoofdpersoon Adam Burger betrokken bij een complot waarvan hij de omvang niet bevat. Op zijn vlucht door een verwoest landschap blijkt hij slechts een pion te zijn. Tot hij beseft dat zijn herinnering en zijn eigen wil niet door een ander beheerst kunnen worden.
|

|
||
In een land zonder vogels is een roman die ingaat op de vraag wat het betekent om mens te zijn. Is een verzetsdaad het enige antwoord in een omgeving van onderdrukking?
|
||
|
||
In een land zonder vogels is een uiterst actuele en relevante roman, niet alleen voor Zuid-Afrika, maar voor de hele wereld. En het boek is een ware pageturner. Als je er eenmaal aan begint, wil je het boek niet meer neerleggen.
|
||
|
||
Helaas is Harry Kalmer er niet meer om zelf aan dit gesprek deel te nemen. Gelukkig heeft zijn goede vriend Hans Pienaar, journalist en zelf ook schrijver en dramaturg, zich bereid verklaard om een inleiding op Harry Kalmers leven en werk te geven. Ook Pieter Rouwendal, die bij uitgeverij Aldo Manuzio verantwoordelijk is voor al die prachtig bezorgde vertalingen van Zuid-Afrikaanse schrijvers als Karel Schoeman en Wilma Stockenström, en Rob van der Veer, de Nederlandse vertaler van In een land zonder vogels, komen aan het woord om hun visie op het boek te geven.

Elke laatste donderdag van de maand wordt er een presentatie gelivestreamd via het YouTube-kanaal van het Zuid-Afrikahuis. Jolyn Phillips (1990) is geboren in Gansbaai aan de Zuid-Afrikaanse zuidkust. Ze studeerde aan de Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland (UWK), waar ze een Master in Creatief Schrijven voltooide onder leiding van schrijfster Meg Vandermerwe. Momenteel is Phillips docent aan de Universiteit van Johannesburg (UJ), waar ze onder meer college geeft in Afrikaanse letterkunde en Vertaaltheorie.

||
Phillips debuteerde in 2016 met de Engelstalige verhalenbundel Tjieng Tjang Tjerries and other stories, die onmiddellijk werd genomineerd voor de Engelse UJ Debuutprijs en die in 2018 werd bekroond met de NIHSS-prijs voor fictie. In 2017 debuteerde Phillips voor de tweede keer, nu met een Afrikaanstalige dichtbundel, Radbraak. Hiermee werd ze genomineerd voor de Elisabeth Eybersprijs en won ze de UJ Debuutprijs voor het beste Afrikaanstalige debuut.
|
||
|
||
In augustus 2020 publiceerde Phillips het epische gedicht Bientang. Vandaag de dag herinnert slechts de naam van een restaurant in het populaire kustdorp Hermanus nog aan deze historische figuur, ‘die laaste Strandloper’. Wie was Bientang? Uit historische documenten, lokale overlevering en eigentijdse onzekerheden beginnen haar contouren zich voor even af te tekenen. De toon van de bundel is er echter een van verlies over een verleden dat geen sporen heeft achtergelaten in de ambtelijke geschiedenis van het land.
|
||
|
||
In een recensie in Rapport schrijft Hein Viljoen: ‘Bientang is ’n lofwaardige en oortuigende poging om die raaisel van die legende van Bientang en haar grot in Hermanus te verklaar. Dit maak ’n sterk saak uit vir die andersheid van die Khoi-wêreld en roep daardeur die vreemdheid en andersheid van Bientang geslaag op. As argeologiese projek om die verlede op te skryf, te rekonstrueer en te argiveer is die gedig ewe geslaag. Besonder aan die gedig is die taal daarvan, ryk aan die simboliek van plante, die see en seedinge. Bientang kry aangrypend gestalte as vrou oorgelewer aan tragiese omstandighede, maar bly [“woordvry”] die digter se woorde ontglip.’
|
||
|
||
Jolyn Phillips is een multitalent. Ze heeft een aantal gedichten uit Radbraak op muziek gezet en treedt regelmatig op met het kunstenaarscollectief Die Wasgoedlyn. In 2018 stond ze samen met Antjie Krog en de rapper Meneer Naudé in Amsterdam op het toneel tijdens het Festival voor het Afrikaans. In 2019 werd ze genomineerd voor een Fiësta voor haar toneelbewerking van Tjieng Tjang Tjerries alsook voor een Kanna voor beste muziektheatervoorstelling en beste opkomende artiest. Een toneelbewerking van Bientang ligt al klaar; het wachten is op een kans om het stuk in productie te nemen.
|
||
|
||
Jolyn Phillips wordt tijdens deze eerste aflevering van Boeken uit het Huis geïnterviewd door prof. dr. Yves T’Sjoen. Yves T’Sjoen is als hoogleraar verbonden aan de Afdeling Nederlands van de Vakgroep Letterkunde van de Universiteit Gent en bijzonder hoogleraar van het Departement Afrikaans/Nederlands van de Universiteit Stellenbosch. T’Sjoen is een van de initiatiefnemers tot de oprichting van het Gents centrum voor het Afrikaans en de studie van Zuid-Afrika en publiceert regelmatig over actuele kwesties in Zuid-Afrika en over Afrikaanse literatuur.

Historicus, schrijver en kunstenaar Leonor Faber-Jonker maakte doka-afdrukken van een selectie lantaarnplaatjes met beschadigingen. Ze is gefascineerd door het fenomeen ‘patina’, slijtage die waarde toevoegt. Het fysiek werken met de lantaarnplaatjes met gesprongen glas, uitgebeten vlekken en sierlijke opschriften bracht een sterke historische sensatie teweeg. Door de afdrukken te manipuleren heeft zij de vervorming door de tand des tijds willen onderzoeken en verbeelden. Ooit hadden de lantaarnplaatjes, met encyclopedische afbeeldingen van de flora en fauna, landbouw en steden van het Zuid-Afrika van ca. 1900, een educatieve functie. In de doka veranderden deze afbeeldingen in abstracte, bevreemdende beelden.

U kunt de expositie bezichtigen op maandag, dinsdag en donderdag van 10:00 tot 16:00 uur. Er zijn ook limited edition riso prints van de geëxposeerde werken te koop voor € 20,00.

Bijna niemand weet dat Van Goghs jongste broer naar Zuid-Afrika verhuisde. Of dat het nichtje van de muze van Breitner wilde leven zoals muziek klinkt. Duikt in Zuid-Afrika een nieuw zonnebloemen-schilderij op? Vincent van Gogh schilderde de zonnebloemenserie in het jaar dat zijn jongste broer Cor naar Zuid-Afrika vertrok. Zeven versies, om het Gele Huis op te vrolijken. Gaf hij een achtste mee aan zijn broer? Cor raakt bevriend met de entomoloog Jacobus Swierstra en de zusjes Niesje en Geesje Kwak, model voor de kimono schilderijen van Breitner. Zij zijn net als Cor, Jacobus en vele andere Nederlanders, naar de Transvaal geëmigreerd met hoop op een betere toekomst. Aafke is jaren later terug in Zuid-Afrika om te zorgen voor haar zieke vader die niet meer spreken kan. Ze is ook op zoek naar het schilderij dat vroeger bij haar thuis hing: de vaas met zonnebloemen. Vindt zij het schilderij dat haar enige herinnering is aan haar overleden moeder? In deze roman cirkelen feit en fictie om elkaar heen. Het is een geschiedenis van triomf en tragedie en alles wat daartussen ligt. Het leest als een liefdesbrief over vriendschap en verlies, over de kracht van herinneringen, over de kunst om gelukkig te leven. En over liefde in al zijn vormen.

Het verhaal speelt zich af tegen de achtergrond van de grote emigratiegolf naar Zuid-Afrika aan het einde van de 19e eeuw, afgewisseld met de jaren vijftig. Elsa Joubert is op 14 juni van dit jaar op 97-jarige leeftijd aan de gevolgen van COVID-19 overleden. Joubert schreef een groot aantal romans, verhalen en reisreportages en gold binnen de Afrikaanse literatuur als de belangrijkste vrouwelijke auteur van haar tijd.
|
||
|
||
Met haar roman Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena (1978), gebaseerd op urenlange gesprekken met haar eigen huishulp, Eunice Ntsatha, opende Joubert veel witte Zuid-Afrikanen de ogen voor het onrecht van het apartheidssysteem. Poppie werd in veertien talen vertaald en de toneelbewerking was een groot succes, zowel in Zuid-Afrika als internationaal. Dit jaar ging de verfilming Poppie Nongena in première. Vanwege zijn maatschappelijke impact wordt het boek wel de Afrikaanse Max Havelaar genoemd. Er werd naar Joubert geluisterd omdat ze van binnenuit de witte Afrikaanstalige gemeenschap kwam. Haar vele reizen, als jonge vrouw alleen, dwars over het Afrikaanse continent, hadden haar echter al vroeg bewust gemaakt van een ander perspectief. Hierin was Joubert haar tijd ver vooruit.
|
||
|
||
Joubert heeft ook altijd een voorbeeldfunctie vervuld voor vrouwelijke schrijvers die na haar kwamen. Joubert bleef tot op hoge leeftijd schrijven. Toen Spertyd, het derde en laatste deel van haar autobiografie, verscheen, was ze al 95 jaar oud. En enkele weken voor haar dood schreef ze nog een open brief waarin ze het opnam voor haar generatiegenoten en protesteerde tegen het sociale isolement van bejaarden in verzorgingstehuizen als gevolg van de coronamaatregelen.
|
||
|
||
Elsa Joubert was gerespecteerd en geliefd. Ze won vele literaire prijzen, waaronder de twee grootste, de Hertzogprijs voor Die reise van Isobelle (1995) en de UJ-prijs voor Reisiger (2009); Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena (1978) werd maar liefst vier keer bekroond. In 2001 ontving Joubert een eredoctoraat van de Universiteit van Stellenbosch en in 2004 werd ze door de Zuid-Afrikaanse regering vereerd met de zilveren Orde van Ikhamanga.
|
||
|
||
Jouberts overlijden in juni van dit jaar was voorpaginanieuws, zowel in de Afrikaanse als in de Engelse Zuid-Afrikaanse kranten, en zelfs The New York Times plaatste een uitvoerige obituary. In een brief die werd voorgelezen bij de herdenkingsbijeenkomst voor Joubert in Kaapstad, schreef de Zuid-Afrikaanse Nobelprijswinnaar J.M. Coetzee vanuit Australië: ‘With her wide experience of the world, her firm but generous moral sense, and her sharp, inquiring mind, Elsa Joubert represented the very best of the Afrikaans intellectual tradition.’
|

Op donderdag 5 november organiseert het Zuid-Afrikahuis in samenwerking met de Commissie voor Zuid-Afrika van de Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde een herdenkingssymposium voor Elsa Joubert. De bijeenkomst heeft vanwege de coronamaatregelen een hybride karakter. De centrale presentatie vindt plaats in het Zuid-Afrikahuis in Amsterdam. Sommige sprekers zullen digitaal aanwezig zijn. Het volledige programma zal daarna via de website en het YouTube-kanaal van het Zuid-Afrikahuis terug te kijken zijn.

Een andere, nog veel belangrijkere vraag is: waarom verschijnen er relatief zo weinig biografieën van (of andere publicaties over) andere mensen, mannen en vrouwen, wit en zwart, die wereldwijd hún stempel op de/onze gedeelde geschiedenissen hebben gedrukt?
|
||

||
Bas Kromhout, historicus en senior redacteur van Historisch Nieuwsblad, gaat in gesprek met Dik van der Meulen, biograaf van de ‘wereldreiziger voor het vaderland’ Hendrik Muller (1859-1941), Lindie Koorts, biografe van ‘de profeet van de apartheid’ D.F. Malan (1874-1959) en Barbara Henkes die met een biografische benadering nagaat hoe grensoverschrijdende familiegeschiedenissen zijn geraakt door een politiek van raciaal onderscheid ten tijde van het nationaalsocialisme en apartheid.
