text: 'This is really a must-see place of remembrance in Warsaw, centred on the Emanuel Ringelblum archives of the Warsaw
|
||
Ghetto. In many ways, far more harrowing and bleak than the POLIN centre, the Jewish Historical Institute tells the
|
||
story quietly through the notes, memoirs, postcards and letters of ordinary people. Very few of them survived the Great
|
||
Deportation but many of them did not even survive to be taken to the concentration camp: thousands died of disease and
|
||
starvation.
|
||
|
||
The displays are in both Polish and English. It is a very quiet place, with few of the mass of visitors getting to this
|
||
spot.
|
||
|
||
The staff at the entrance were extremely kind but the sour-faced older room attendant was very odd, barking angrily
|
||
at me as I started to go upstairs to the temporary exhibit. Her manner was so aggressive that I went back down to the
|
||
entrance to see if I had done something wrong. I hadn’t, and I returned upstairs. The temporary exhibition about the
|
||
Torah scrolls on the top floor is fascinating.
|

There is a small cafe and bookshop.'

design of the museum is accessible whilst being totally enthralling and awe inspiring. Whilst POLIN may give an overview

of 1,000 years of Jewish history in Poland, the JHI’s exhibition of the Ringelblum Archives shines a light on one of

||
Polish Jewry’s finest achievements, borne from the middle of its annihilation.

creation of the Warsaw ghetto, life in the ghetto, and how things ended there. A lot of letters and notes from folks

in the ghetto before they were transported to Triblinka and Aushwitz.

||
90 minutes would be a good duration for the visit. Free lockers for your backpack and jackets. Free entry on Mondays.'
