text: 'I was thrilled that the Folger Shakespeare Library remained open while the Library of Congress was closed due to the government shutdown. It''s a wonderful place for both serious research and brief visits. I especially enjoyed the exhibitions and the cafeteria. We also saw a fantastic production of Julius X: A Re-envisioning of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar in their theater-the acting was superb.'

text: The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., is the world's foremost research center for all things Shakespeare, boasting the largest collection of First Folios (82 copies!) and related historical materials. Beyond its scholarly riches, the Folger's beautifully renovated building offers a vibrant public experience, featuring compelling, interactive exhibitions drawn from its rare collections, an ornate theater for performances, and engaging programs that make the Bard accessible to everyone, from scholars to families.

text: 'Do not miss!
Started the visit in the cafe to knock out some work and was so pleasantly surprised by every single room in this place!
I am by no means a Shakespeare aficionado or enthusiast but this entire collection was so well curated and easy to navigate I didnt want to leave. The walls are covered in recreations of illustrations, the lighting is dim but still light enough to read. And… Its not just Shakespeare!
Seriously a vast collection. All the docents were pleasant and so knowledgeable. There is also a theatre with performances daily.
Would and will return! Cant wait to tell everyone I know to visit!'

text: Excellent Shakespeare resources, family friendly. Very knowledgeable docents and staff. We enjoyed sleuthing to reveal hidden pictures, learning about the development of the printing press, examining the map of Shakespeare and delighting in the art both inside and on the outside of the building. Unfortunately, viewing the theater was not possible. They said they were preparing for a show and it could be viewed another time- this assumes we can make multiple visits. Hopefully they can come up with a solution in the future.

text: 'The Shakespeare Library may not be large, but its facilities are impressively modern and thoughtfully designed.
Today, I was lucky to visit as the library was open to the public, and I truly enjoyed the experience. The space is welcoming, functional, and reflects a deep respect for readers and researchers alike. I really hope to return someday with more time to dive deeper into study and exploration.'

title: Shakespeares Boy Player Alexander Cooke
description: 'In Shakespeares time, the actresses were boys—and for the most celebrated of them, fame came early but could end abruptly with a voice change. In this episode, author Nicole Galland joins us to talk about the world of boy players, young apprentices who performed womens roles onstage in England before 1660.
Gallands novel, Boy, follows one of these real-life members of Shakespeares company, Alexander “Sander Cooke,” and his fictional best friend, Joan, a fiercely curious young woman who disg'

title: King Lear and Maos China, with Nan Z. Da
description: 'Nan Z. Da, in her book The Chinese Tragedy of King Lear, finds unsettling parallels between Shakespeares play and 20th-century China under Mao Zedong.
Da, a literature professor at Johns Hopkins University, weaves together personal history and literary analysis to reveal how King Lear reflects—and even anticipates—the emotional and political horrors of authoritarian regimes. From public punishments to desperate displays of flattery, from state paranoia to family betrayal, she shows how Shakesp'

The 100 Ballads project is a deep dive into the hits of early modern England—a kind of 17th-century Billboard Hot 100. Drawing from thousands of surviving printed ballads, researchers Angela McShane and Christopher Marsh have ranked the most popular songs of the period. These broadsides—cheaply printed sheets sold for a penny—offer surprising insight into the '

description: 'Who was Lambert Simnel—the boy who nearly claimed the Tudor throne? In late 15th-century England, identity wasnt just a matter of birth—it could be a political weapon, a tool for rebellion, and sometimes, an outright performance. The story of Simnel, a boy plucked from obscurity and passed off as the York heir, reveals how precarious the Tudor dynasty really was—and how easily the lines between truth and fiction could blur.
Author Jo Harkin joins us to explore the strange life of Simnel, the s'

Shakespeares plays reflect these cultural currents. In The Tempest, the character of Caliban—described as savage, deformed, and barely human—embodies the fears and fantasies that haunted early modern encounters with the so-called'
