Migration is embedded in Jamaican and Caribbean culture. There is consensus
|
||
in the literature that cash remitting is an essential dimension of this culture,
|
||
with critical significance for livelihood and survival strategies in households.
|
||
Although there is an established body of research which documents this significance,
|
||
there is limited understanding of the historical evolution of the culture of
|
||
cash remitting and receiving and motivations regarding remittance consumption.
|
||
The Remittances and Migration Project will seek to address this deficit by shedding
|
||
light on historical and contemporary cultural practices of cash remitting and
|
||
the development of the financial remittances sector in Jamaica.
|
||
|
||
|
||
The project has four objectives: (1) Conduct empirical research on the culture
|
||
of remitting; (2) Conduct empirical research on the development of the financial
|
||
architecture for cash remittances in the Jamaican context; (3) Enhance the teaching
|
||
and learning role of the UWI through dissemination of research findings. This
|
||
will include the curation and hosting of an exhibition on the culture and architecture
|
||
of cash remitting, the publication of one journal article and a policy report,
|
||
and the hosting of a (virtual) policy round table. The project would also support
|
||
training of two to three graduate research assistants, with skills in oral history
|
||
and archival methodology; and (4) Generate an income stream for the University
|
||
through development of an attraction product and space marketed to the local
|
||
and diasporan Jamaican community and tourists. The proposed space would be developed
|
||
in collaboration with industry stakeholders.
|
||
|
||
|
||
The project therefore has important social and commercial benefits in keeping
|
||
with the University’s strategy for Restructuring, Transformation and Growth.
|
||
In terms of the latter, it is envisioned that successful staging of the exhibition
|
||
could provide the foundation to support development of a dedicated space which
|
||
honours the culture of migration in the Caribbean. At present, there is no single
|
||
physical site (museum, gallery, or library) in the region that pays homage to
|
||
a social process, which holds key significance to our historical and contemporary
|
||
development.
|
||
|
||
|
||
The research project will employ a mixed methods approach to data collection.
|
||
Quantitative data will be collected via an online survey that will be administered
|
||
to diasporans living in six major destination cities within and outside the
|
||
Caribbean. Qualitative data will be gathered through the collection of oral
|
||
histories, as well as desk and archival research on the development of the financial
|
||
remittance sector in Jamaica. Both sets of methods will rely on convenience
|
||
sampling. Ultimately, it is envisioned that an exhibition will be mounted to
|
||
chronicle individuals’ and households’ lived experience of receiving and sending
|
||
cash remittances, as well as the evolution of the financial remittance sector
|
||
in Jamaica, since the nation’s independence. To support this initiative, a call
|
||
will be issued for artefacts and vignettes from individuals and money transfer
|
||
operators in Jamaica, and in the diaspora.
|
||
|
||
|
||
It is anticipated that the findings will shed further light on the cultural
|
||
meaning, significance and role of financial remittances for Jamaican households.
|
||
Sharing this information with the public will enhance appreciation of the value
|
||
of migration for micro and macroeconomic development. This is significant given
|
||
the high dependence on remittances in a post-pandemic and disaster-prone context.
|
||
In addition, tracing the technological advancements in cash remitting will contextualize
|
||
the current move in the financial sector to digitize remittances flows.
