Built on the site of the Tobinodai ruins, the museum exhibits artifacts from

||
this site as well as other ruins throughout the city. It emphasizes that this
|
||
is the first "hearth" (fireplace) to be discovered in the history of Japanese
|
||
archaeology, and the exhibits show the museum''s pride in the fact that this
|
||
important discovery was made in this city. While other museums simply display
|
||
the artifacts as they are, this museum provides a detailed explanation of the
|
||
excavation process.

||
|
||
It''s also interesting to see a reconstruction of a pit dwelling indoors. Only
|
||
the interior is on display. These dwellings are usually built outdoors, but
|
||
considering the cost of regularly re-thatching them, this may not be a bad idea.
|
||
|
||
The building is an extension of the junior high school next door, but the interior
|
||
isn''t connected. I initially thought it would be a typical postmodern building,
|
||
but it seems to be based on Jomon pottery.'
