kempersc 3ff0e33bf9 Add UML diagrams and scripts for custodian schema
- Created PlantUML diagrams for custodian types, full schema, legal status, and organizational structure.
- Implemented a script to generate GraphViz DOT diagrams from OWL/RDF ontology files.
- Developed a script to generate UML diagrams from modular LinkML schema, supporting both Mermaid and PlantUML formats.
- Enhanced class definitions and relationships in UML diagrams to reflect the latest schema updates.

Quick Status: Export Functionality Complete

Date: November 23, 2025
Session Duration: 1 hour
Tasks Completed: 4 of 6

What's Done

Export Functionality (Task 4) - COMPLETE

Added 3 export buttons to toolbar:

  1. PNG Export 📸

    • Converts SVG → Canvas → PNG
    • White background, auto-padding
    • Filename: diagram_name.png
  2. SVG Export 🎨

    • Native vector format
    • Preserves scalability
    • Filename: diagram_name.svg
  3. Source Download 📄

    • Raw Mermaid/PlantUML/GraphViz
    • Filename: diagram_name.{mmd|puml|dot}

Files Modified:

  • frontend/src/pages/UMLViewerPage.tsx (+60 lines)
  • frontend/src/components/uml/UMLVisualization.tsx (+100 lines)
  • frontend/src/pages/UMLViewerPage.css (+10 lines)

UI Location: Toolbar right side (blue buttons)

Technical Implementation:

  • HTML5 Canvas API (PNG)
  • XMLSerializer (SVG)
  • Blob API + URL.createObjectURL (all formats)
  • Custom events: uml-export-png, uml-export-svg

🎯 What's Next

Remaining Tasks (2 of 6)

5. Performance Testing 🔬

Priority: Medium
Estimated Time: 3-4 hours

Tasks:

  • Test with 100+ node diagrams
  • Measure rendering time
  • Profile force simulation performance
  • Check memory usage
  • Identify bottlenecks

Tools:

  • Chrome DevTools Performance tab
  • React Profiler
  • Lighthouse

Optimization Ideas:

  • Canvas rendering for >50 nodes
  • Lazy loading large diagrams
  • WebWorker for parsing
  • Memoization for repeated renders

6. Mobile Responsiveness 📱

Priority: Low-Medium
Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

Tasks:

  • Test on mobile devices (iOS/Android)
  • Implement sidebar collapse on mobile
  • Touch gesture support (pinch-zoom)
  • Responsive button sizes
  • Portrait/landscape optimization

Breakpoints:

  • Mobile: < 768px
  • Tablet: 768px - 1024px
  • Desktop: > 1024px

CSS to Add:

@media (max-width: 768px) {
  .uml-viewer-page {
    grid-template-columns: 1fr;
  }
  .uml-viewer-page__sidebar {
    position: fixed;
    transform: translateX(-100%);
    transition: transform 0.3s;
  }
  .uml-viewer-page__sidebar.open {
    transform: translateX(0);
  }
}

🚀 How to Continue

Option A: Performance Testing

# Generate large test diagram
python scripts/generate_graphviz_from_owl.py \
  schemas/20251121/rdf/custodian_multi_aspect_20251122_155319.owl.ttl \
  frontend/public/schemas/test/large_100_nodes.dot

# Open DevTools Performance tab
# Start recording
# Load large diagram
# Stop recording
# Analyze flame chart

Key Metrics to Track:

  • Time to Interactive (TTI)
  • First Contentful Paint (FCP)
  • Frame rate (should be 60fps)
  • Heap size (should stay < 100MB)

Option B: Mobile Responsiveness

# Run dev server
npm run dev

# Test with Chrome DevTools
# 1. Toggle device toolbar (Cmd+Shift+M)
# 2. Select iPhone 14 Pro
# 3. Test interactions
# 4. Check layout

# Test on real device
# 1. Get local IP: ifconfig | grep "inet "
# 2. Visit http://192.168.x.x:5173 on phone
# 3. Test gestures

Features to Add:

  • Hamburger menu for sidebar
  • Touch event handlers
  • Reduced button text on mobile (icons only)
  • Scroll snap for diagram selection

📊 Current Progress

[████████░░░░] 67% Complete

✅ 1. Generate GraphViz DOT file
✅ 2. Fix GraphViz parser
✅ 3. Node details panel (already existed)
✅ 4. Export functionality (PNG, SVG, Source)
🔲 5. Performance testing
🔲 6. Mobile responsiveness

🎨 Current UI State

Dev Server: Running on http://localhost:5173
Active Diagrams: 6 types working (Mermaid, PlantUML, GraphViz, ER)
Export Buttons: Visible in toolbar (blue, right side)

Toolbar Layout:

[Fit] [Zoom+] [Zoom-] [Reset] | [PNG↓] [SVG↓] [Source↓] Diagram Name

To Test Export:

  1. Load any diagram from sidebar
  2. Click blue export button (PNG/SVG/Source)
  3. Check browser Downloads folder
  4. Verify filename matches diagram name
  5. Open exported file to confirm quality

💡 Recommendations

If 2+ hours available: Do Performance Testing
If 1-2 hours available: Do Mobile Responsiveness
If < 1 hour: Document current state, plan next session

Prioritization Rationale:

  • Performance matters more for production deployment
  • Mobile usage is lower for technical diagrams
  • Export functionality unlocks immediate user value
